This is the iconic Garden Egg Chair, designed by the Hungarian-Dutch designer Peter Ghyczy (1940–2022) in 1968, originally produced by Reuter Products. One of the most recognisable silhouettes of Space Age design, the Garden Egg is a clamshell lounge chair with a distinctive rounded fiberglass body that opens to reveal an upholstered interior seat. The chair was conceived as an outdoor piece: the clamshell top closes down over the cushioned interior, protecting it from rain and the elements when not in use — a practical and elegantly resolved design detail. With a 75 x 86 cm footprint and a seat height ranging from 36 cm open to 100 cm closed, it makes an extraordinary statement piece indoors or out.
